The United Arab Emirates claims it has detained a member of its royal family shown torturing an Afghan grain merchant on a videotape, diplomatic sources say. An unnamed U.S. State Department official told CNN the emirates claim to have placed Sheikh Issa bin Zayed Nahyan of Abu Dhabi under house arrest. The United States, however, reportedly has not independently verified the assertion. UAE says royal shown torturing arrested On the tape, Issa, brother of the emir of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Nahyan, tries to extract a confession from the grain dealer by beating him with a nailed board, burning him with a cigarette lighter and shocking him with a cattle prod, CNN said. Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director of Human Rights Watch, told CNN that Issa deserves to jailed for the actions shown on the videotape, which she said "shocked the world." "The report of the arrest was reassuring, but now the government needs to make the details public. Secretive prosecutions will not deter further abuses and torture," she said. Senior U.S. officials have reportedly indicated the torture episode is holding up the ratification of a civil nuclear deal between the UAE and the United States.
