Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of the Russian republic of Chechnya, says he opposes the idea of merging the province with the neighboring republic of Ingushetia. His comments came in response to media reports of plans to join the two North Caucasus republics, which were a single Chechen-Ingush autonomy in the Soviet Union. Chechen leader against unification with Ingushetia "I am absolutely against the idea of unifying the two republics, and I have repeatedly said this in the media," Kadyrov said. "The idea is senseless. The [Chechen] republic is at a stage of active reconstruction and social and economic development, which is why extra sociopolitical and socioeconomic burdens in this situation are highly undesirable," Kadyrov told journalists. He said politicians and media should be more responsible in their statements, and not draw the Chechen leadership into discussions on this issue. The Russian presidential administration also has rejected the reports. "Rumors of the unification of the Chechen Republic and Ingushetia are absolutely ungrounded," said Oleg Govorun, the head of the domestic policy department. Ingushetia has seen a rise in violence in recent months. The Russia-based human rights group, the Moscow Helsinki Group, said in late September that the republic was on the verge of civil war as fighting between militants and authorities intensified. Kadyrov said that he wished the Ingush nation peace and prosperity and that he had no doubt that the Ingush leadership would find common ground with people and manage to repel those trying to destabilize the social and political situation in the republic.
