Anniversary of WW2 operation to rescue Allied pilots

Operation Halyard was launched in 1944 with the goal of rescuing hundreds of Allied pilots shot down over occupied Serbia.

It was carried out by the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland (Chetnik Detachments of the Yugoslav Army), the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and the local population in the villages under Mt. Suvobor.

Serbian and U.S. state delegations will on Friday unveil seven bilingual historical panels dedicated to the people and the events that marked this endeavor - the families who hid the pilots, the location of a secret field hospital, the former location of an airport, and the house that served as the secret headquarters of the mission.

Operation Halyard is considered to be of the most successful Allied rescue operations behind enemy lines during World War II.

The U.S. Air Force orchestra will perform in the Pranjani elementary school named after Ivo Andric, it was announced on Thursday.
