Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar presented the results of last year's survey and said it was the third of its kind and that it followed European standards, which would allow Serbia to compare the results with other countries in Europe.

The results of the previous survey, from 2006, put the percent of overweight adults at 17.3, while 8.5 percent of children had the same problem.

The Health Ministry will work harder to promote healthy lifestyles and protect the health of the Serbian people, he said.

Alcohol consumption is also on the rise, since the percentage of regular or occasional drinkers was at 40 in 2006.

The percentage of adults who smoke every day or occasionally went up from 33 in 2006 to 34.7 percent, which is not a significant increase in terms of statistics, chief surveyor Jasmina Grozdanov pointed out.

It is encouraging that the awareness concerning various risk factors and their bad influence on health has gone up among the population, she remarked.

The Health Ministry supported by the World Bank conducted the survey in 2013 on a representative sample.

The data was gathered from 6,500 households and 15,999 of their members.
