BELGRADE B92 Editor-in-Chief Veran Matic B92 has been appointed to head a government commission tasked with finding out the truth about murders of journalists. The commission will look into the probes related to the deaths of Dada Vujasinovic, Slavko Curuvija and Milan Pantic. B92's Matic to head commission on murder of journalists The Serbian government on Thursday in Belgrade formally set up the commission, which will consider the facts obtained in the investigations into the killings of journalists in Serbia. The initiator of the establishment of the commission, Veran Matic, believes that finding out who deliberately prevented the clarification of the crimes in question would be the first step towards discovering the killers and those who ordered the murders. "I have been launching this initiative for more than four years. The previous government was interested in principle, but there was no commitment to do it," he noted, and stated that discussions are already taking place with BIA and police officials about the documentation that will be collected, where it will be located, and who will analyze it. Matic has previously stated that the commission should have the analysis of all previous investigations and documentation related to these investigations as its first goal, in order to determine where the omissions were made and which events led to a situation where none of the murders had been resolved or perpetrators punished. Earlier, Jovo Curuvija, the brother of the murdered journalist Slavko Curuvija, stated that the commission would only be meaningful if its members were people "who care about justice and truth". The Serbian government in mid-September last year decided to form an international commission to investigate the unsolved murders of journalists in Serbia. Besides the representatives of Serbian security services, prosecutors and media, " respected international investigators would also take part", it was announced at the time. The Center for Euro-Atlantic Studies in Belgrade today sent to the government and its First Deputy PM Aleksandar Vucic a request to extend the mandate of the commission. Veran Matic (file) B92
