Military chaplains will join the Serbian Armed Forces starting in the second half of 2011, it has been announced. The clergy serving with the military will have ranks, but will not carry arms. Chaplains to join Serbian Army The service will be held by highly educated priests appointed by traditional churches and religious communities. The chaplains will hold officer rank and will serve in the General Staff Operative Headquarters, brigades and battalions, the Military Academy Belgrade and military health care institutes. Serbian Defence Minister Dragan Sutanovac and Chief-of-staff of the Serbian Armed Forces Miloje Miletic have stated on several occasions in 2010 that the appointment of military chaplains is in keeping with the tradition of the Serbian Military, as well as the practice of modern armies around the world. The idea of inclusion of chaplains in the Serbian Army, which dates from 2000, is based on the analysis of experience of foreign armies and the Serbian tradition. It implies the presence of chaplains in the military facilities and special space for religious needs of military officers of all confessions. The adoption of the Law on the Serbian Military in 2007 created conditions for the Serbian Armed Forces to organize its religious service according to contemporary military trends and the Serbian tradition.
