B92 TV journalist Brankica Stankovic today received the 2009 Jug Grizelj Award for investigative journalism. Jury President Velimir Curguz Kazimir explained that the judges were led by one question alone – which journalist in 2009 had done the most exciting, investigative and revealing work, which provoked the strongest reactions, launched a public debate and lading to the most direct answers from the executive authority and justice. The protection of media and journalists and their rights to reveal all kinds of abuse, violation of human rights and crimes is inseparable from the very essence of democracy and rule of law, Curguz Kazimir said. “This is a public roll-call for all media in Serbia, because not just one TV station and several print media should engage in investigative journalism. If that continues, investigative journalism will share the fate of travel literature – the more people travel, the less travel literature is being written,” the jury’s president stated. Accepting the award, Stankovic said she “had the jitters”, but also felt that now she had even bigger obligation to continue with her work. She pointed out that the Jug Grizelj Award “also belonged to all journalists and producers of Insajder and to all B92 editors as well”. ”Insajder has been dealing with various topics,” she stressed, noting that after the latest series exploring hooliganism, the safety of the journalists working on the program had been jeopardized. “Awards obligate us to do much more, and that is, to make sure Insajder is not an exception, but to make investigative journalism, without compromises and in the interest of the public, a rule of journalistic behavior in the media in Serbia,” Stankovic, who has won the award for a second time, concluded.
