A gay-lesbian organization has announced it expects authorities in Serbia to provide satisfactory protection for the participants in Belgrade's Pride Parade. Rainbow Rose, an organization of social-democratic political persuasion, has sent a letter to President Boris Tadic warning that it, along with other European human rights organizations, will be monitoring the gay parade, scheduled for September 20, with great attention. Rainbow Rose pointed out at the level of homophobia in Serbia and reminded the president about the cases of violence against gay persons, including a tear-gas attack on a gay club in July this year. The organization also reminded of the new Serbian Anti-Discrimination Law, which could not have been adopted without the votes of Tadic's Democrats (DS), to say that the law also includes provisions guarding against the discrimination of persons based on their sexual orientation. "Therefore we recognize your desire to promote human rights and fight discrimination," the letter said. "As an observer in the Party of European Socialists, your party should be proud of the reforms that provide equal rights to all citizens, including gays and lesbians," the letter concluded.
