Most traffic accidents in Serbia are caused by drivers younger than 24 and older than 65, says a report by the Philosophy Faculty's Psychology Department. According to daily Politika, women more often and more consistently respect traffic laws and are less likely to violate them. Report profiles dangerous drivers Philosophy Faculty Docent Milanko Cabarkapa says that the potentially riskiest drivers are those aged between 18 and 22, "as they have superior psychophysical skills and no experience whatsoever in traffic". According to him, in the second risk category are those older than 65, while the third falls to drivers with high self-confidence, who have become too relaxed because of their level of experience. Cabarkapa explains that accidents are caused by one type of driver, which led to the psychological theory that the culprits behind traffic accidents are most often drivers whose personal characteristics include authoritarianism, aggression and impulsiveness. He says that "offensive" drivers are not difficult to recognize on the road: they drive as though they are under constant strain to break out at the head of an imaginary column, are annoyed by all vehicles in front of them, they trust their reflexes and personify the importance of their cars. Furthermore, "their favorite gear is fifth, the steering wheel is more important to them than the rearview mirror, they see driving as a competition and themselves as the winners, and they want to eliminate, overtake and surpass everything that stands in the way of their imaginary trophy". All this has in the past year alone caused close to 1,000 deaths on Serbia's roads, since the police say most of the accidents are caused by reckless and drunk driving, ignoring of traffic laws and poor adjustment to the weather and condition of the road.
