The Mlava River in Serbia's eastern region near Stari Kostolac has started to flood the area, reports say. The water broke the embankment at the same location as in previous years. The levels of the river rose as heavy snowfall of several weeks ago started to melt. Flood warnings issued in eastern Serbia However, although the authorities introduced extraordinary flood defense measures, no household in the villages in the region has yet been affected by the rising water. Local resident, Kostolac Autotransport company, Pozarevac public waterworks company, MUP and Army units all worked to build a levee on along about half a kilometer of the river's banks this morning. The Danube levels, meanwhile, have not risen, so that Mlava's waters are flowing in undisturbed, which improves the flooding prognosis for the threatened area upstream. Goran Nikolic of the MUP Protection and Rescue Service told B92 that the situation in the field this afternoon is good, with Mlava's tributary Vitovnica seeing its levels drop by about half a meter. Nikolic said he did not expect the river to further flood the area.
