Three people, including former members of the Otpor group, died in a car crash on the Great Morava bridge yesterday. In the accident involving three cars and two trucks, journalist Mile Veljkovic, Pozarevac Otpor member Radojko Lukovic, and music editor for IN TV from Pozarevac Aleksandar Mitrovic lost their lives. Otpor members die in car crash One other person was seriously injured. The car they were in, driven by Mitrovic, careered off the bridge after impact into the river below. Divers pulled the car out with the bodies of the victims from the water at about 1800 CET yesterday. According to Municipal Prosecutor Miroslav Vojinovic, the crash occurred when a truck with Loznica license plates crashed into a column of cars and fell into the river along with one other car. The truck driver was able to save himself by jumping out of the vehicle, after which he was pulled out of the river. Vojinovic told B92 that the driver had been taken into custody after receiving medical attention, since he was suspected of being responsible for the crash. He will be questioned by the investigate judge today. Veljkovic, an Otpor activist, was also a journalist for daily Danas and editor-in-chief of Club Inn TV from Pozarevac. During his 30-year career as a journalist, he also worked for dailies Vreme, Glas Javnosti and Blic, as well as Deutsche Welle, Free Europe, and the Beta news agency. Lukovic was a prominent Otpor member and came into the public eye in 2000 when he was assaulted by Marko Milosevic’s people. A fourth passenger was supposed to be in the car, but he backed out of the trip at the last minute, so that police spent some time searching for him too, until he called police to tell them that he had not left with the three victims, after which the search was called off. The bridge was closed yesterday to traffic from 1400 CET, and about 15 meters of the bridge’s fence was damaged.
