A homeless mother and her two young children died in a fire in the catacombs of the Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad. The fire, caused by a candle lit in their makeshift dwelling, broke out this morning, killing three and severely injuring a man believed to be the husband and the father of the family. The victims were identified by the on-duty judge in Novi Sad as Silvana Berisha, of unknown age, and her sons, Djordje (7) and Stevica (6). Zivorad P., the surviving victim of the fire, is treated in hospital with non-life threatening burns. The phenomenon of people living in the Petrovaradin catacombs, a series of tunnels, bunkers and passages under the fortress, was last reported about two years ago when social services visited the location, to determine that allegedly only one family lived there. After the Petar family was relocated, the problem of the homeless in the fortress was not given any more attention.
