A case combining domestic violence, indifferent bystanders and irresponsible reporting in shaking a town in eastern Serbia. A 30-year old man, identified as J.M., is in police custody in Knjazevac, and is facing criminal charges for abusing his wife in an unprecedented case. Domestic violence case shocks Serbia On Tuesday, the man took his wife to the outskirts of the town and forced her to take all her clothes off, and then made her walk back to Knjazevac naked, in the pouring rain. No one came to the woman's rescue as she walked the streets of the town, located near Serbia's border with Bulgaria. J.M. was arrested the same afternoon. However, it emerged today that this was the second time in four days that the same type of incident took place. Both times the woman was closely followed in a car that is said to have been driven by the man's accomplice. It was only on the second day, that one of the Knjazevac residents witnessing the abuse finally decided to alert the police. The woman, who was also severely beaten, was hospitalized on Tuesday. The accomplice is still at large, while speculation is rife that J.M. is a drug addict. To make matters worse, some Belgrade tabloids have obtained the pictures of the naked woman forced to walk down the street and have printed them in their Thursday editions. Dusan Janjic, an assistant with the culture ministry, in charge of the media, reacted by saying the newspapers will face misdemeanor charges. Only last month two dailies printed photographs of a mauled victim who fell into a zoo bear cage on their front pages, to face criticism, but no official sanction to date.
