Norwegian police arrest Bosnian war crimes suspect

"The man is charged in connection with war crimes that were allegedly committed in Bosnia-Herzegovina during the May through September period of 1992," a news release said.

It said the crimes were reportedly committed against Bosnian Serb civilians at a prison camp.

"He has been charged in a series of cases of gross violence, including assault, illegal detention and several rapes of Bosnian Serb civilians," said police attorney Jan Eirik Thomassen.

The suspect was believed to be part of a paramilitary organization that ran a detention camp at the time.

Thomassen said that since Norway does not yet have specific legislation covering war crimes — a draft law is being considered by parliament — the suspect could be indicted on other charges.

"What we have done is use existing Norwegian criminal law to cover crimes that were committed abroad," he said.

On April 25, another 40-year-old Bosnian man was arrested in Norway for war crimes in Bosnia in 1994 based on an extradition request from his homeland. His case is pending.

Norwegian police last year estimated that at least 50 people suspected of war crimes or crimes against humanity were hiding in Norway.
