Bulgaria: "Russia-friendly" candidate wins presidential bid
This came as exit poll from Sunday's elections showed Rumen Radev winning in the second round receiving over 58 percent of the vote, while the candidate of the prime minister's ruling party, Tsetska Tsacheva, won about 35 percent.According to AFP, Tsacheva "appears to have been dealt a crushing defeat by Moscow-friendly general Rumen Radev, backed by the Socialist opposition."
Borisov announced earlier he would call early elections if his candidate lost.
Reuters was speculating ahead of the vote that the victory was "likely to move Bulgaria closer to Russia, putting it at odds with its European Union and NATO allies, and trigger months of political instability after Borisov said he would step down if his candidate loses."
Bulgaria's president has mostly a ceremonial role without executive powers, while all major decisions must be approved by the parliament.
