The closing statements have begun before the Hague Tribunal in the case of three former Croatian generals accused of war crimes. Ante Gotovina, Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac are accused of persecuting and displacing Serbs from the Kninska Krajina region in 1995 in what is known as Operation Storm. In the final written statement filed on the anniversary of the operation, the prosecution called on Gotovina to be sentenced to 27 years in prison. Gotovina was indicted by the Hague Tribunal for war crimes in 2001, and he was a fugitive until December 2005, at which time he was arrested in Spain and transferred to The Hague.
