Stream talks At the meeting in Moscow the two parties discussed a wide range of issues regarding the energy cooperation, including the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline and the Belene nuclear power plant, reports said. Russian Minister of Energy Sergei Shmatko and his Bulgarian counterpart Traicho Traikov also discussed the issue of natural gas supplies to Bulgaria, considering that one of the contracts expires in 2010. The Russian minister said that it was “necessary to start negotiations about the new contract as soon as possible,” RIA Novosti has reported. According to him, Russia could offer Bulgaria commercially attractive terms and expects the new contract to be “long-lasting and transparent”. “We are interested in making Bulgaria our traditional buyer and we will do our best to keep our offer attractive to the Bulgarian client,” Shmatko said. Bulgaria is currently covering all its needs for gas with Russian supplies. The new government in Sofia, which came to power in July, stated that it intended to diversify the supply list due to the gas crisis in the beginning of the year. The current government supports the South Stream project, which should protect consumers from being dependency on the transit countries. The Russian minister expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation dynamic with Bulgaria regarding South Stream, while Traikov said that the Bulgarian government had not yet decided whether it needed other joint projects with Russia as well, such as the international oil pipeline Burgas-Alexandroupolis, or construction of the Belene plant.
