Slovenia expects a more balanced proposal from EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn for resolving the border dispute between Slovenia and Croatia. Ljubljana wants the proposal to reflect Slovenian interests more. Slovenia wants “more balanced proposal” Slovenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Milan Balazic told a press conference that the amendments to the European Commission’s proposal submitted by Slovenia were a foundation for the final text of the proposal for ending the dispute. Balazic said that the EU did not function on the principle of ultimatums, in response to Croatia’s insistence that Rehn’s proposal was a “take it or leave it” deal. “No negotiating process can be finished in mid-talks, with the free choice of only one side. You cannot unilaterally accept a proposal as being final in the middle of negotiations,” he said. Balazic added that Croatia’s stance showed that they were neither ready to continue negotiations, nor accept a compromise. “We are against continuing a policy of fait accompli and against anyone gaining a unilateral advantage at Slovenia’s expense,” he said. Balazic added that the Slovenian and Croatian foreign ministers would soon be meeting with Rehn.
