Two Romanian sailors have been confirmed dead today after a barge sank after colliding with an Austrian tugboat on Friday. The AP earlier said that the Romanian Mediafax news agency quoted Danube navigation official Florin Mihalache as saying that the Austrian tugboat Linz 2 and the Romanian barge Andreea collided near the southeastern Romanian port of Calarasi, and that two crew members were missing. Sailors die in Danube barge collision Authorities closed off the section of the Danube where the accident occurred. The traffic on the river resumed at noon today. Reports on Saturday said that an environmental disaster had also occurred as the oil spilled into the river from the damaged boats. It also transpired that all seven crew members on the Austrian boat are Serbian nationals. None of them were hurt in the accident, but they now face an investigation. Serbian ministries with jurisdiction in the matter are offering legal assistance to the sailors, as unofficial results of the probe indicate that the Serb crew did not cause the collision.
