Security is being tightened at Ljubljana airport ahead of U.S. President George Bush’s planned visit to Slovenia next week. Starting today, the Dr. Joze Pucnik Airport will implement special security measures in anticipation of the U.S. president’s arrival. Slovenia prepares for Bush visit Bush is expected to arrive in Slovenia on Monday evening and will attend an EU-U.S. summit of senior officials along with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday. The exact time of Air Force One’s touchdown is still not known, but all circulation of vehicles and people around Ljubljana airport will be halted at the appointed hour. Roads leading to the airport will also be closed off during Bush’s arrival and departure, and traffic problems are expected at about 17:00 CET on Monday and at 12:00 CET on Tuesday. The airport has already begun advising travelers that they should arrive at the airport earlier than usual and heed all instructions from security personnel and police because of the heightened security measures. On Thursday the Slovenian government adopted an initiative for Slovenia and the U.S. to conclude an agreement for the temporary deployment of U.S. military personnel on Slovenian territory with a view to averting a possible attacks from the air during the EU-U.S. meeting, said government spokesman Valentin Hajdinjak. Hajdinjak told journalists at a press conference that a number of American soldiers and civilians were already in Slovenia for the visit. American soldiers in uniform and “civilians” will thus take care of Bush’s security issues, though the spokesman did not want to give the details of the agreement because of the “sensitivity of security issues.” Hajdinjak said that the agreement was nonetheless in accordance with already existing regulations of an agreement with NATO, as well as Slovenian law, which allows “allied countries’ military systems and aircrafts” to monitor Slovenian air space.
