A commemoration service was held yesterday for the Macedonian soldiers who died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 11. The 11 soldiers were returning from a EUFOR peacekeeping mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Beta news agency reports from Skopje. Macedonia commemorates helicopter victims The commemoration at Army Headquarters in Skopje, which began with a minute's silence, was attended by the soldier's relatives, state and army leaders, representatives from the religious communities and members of Parliament. "In its recent history, Macedonia has never experienced such a loss of its army members. The accident is all the greater since in one day in a single moment eleven soldiers lost their lives." "They were young soldiers and officers who were returning home to their families, after a successful mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina," said Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski at the commemoration. After the ceremony those present signed a book of condolences, which was open to all citizens. Photographs of the deceased were placed on the plateau in front of Army Headquarters and since yesterday large numbers of citizens have come to light candles and to honor the dead. The funerals of the eleven soldiers are scheduled for Jan. 15. They will be buried in their home towns with full state and military honors. The Macedonian government has announced that Jan. 15 will be a day of mourning.
