"EU member states to decide on opening of Chapter 23"

It is up to the EU member states to decide whether Serbia will open Chapter 23 in its EU accession talks in June, EU representative in Belgrade has said.

"EU member states to decide on opening of Chapter 23"

Asked to comment on a recent statement by US professor Daniel Serwer, who said that he expects Serbia to be ready for EU membership in ten years' time, Davenport told reporters that it is for the EU member states to decide whether a candidate country is ready for membership or not.

Serbia is on the right track, it has opened the membership negotiations and the first chapters, and it is expected to open the next chapters, Davenport said.

"Serbia has action plans for Chapter 23 and now is the time to implement them. That is the best way to achieve faster progress and we all have the task of backing your efforts to steer Serbia to the EU," Davenport said.
