Government lifts emergency situation declared due to floods
An emergency situation was declared due to the floods. The government also announced that the decision to declare a state of elementary disaster was abolished as well.Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic announced the decision earlier in the day.
Vucic also said that next week will see the beginning of the distribution of "comprehensive assistance to the flooded areas in the country, which will be proportionally higher than after the floods of 2014, because there has been less damage now."
Vucic made these comments in the village of Veliko Polje near Obrenovac, a Belgrade municipality hard-hit during the 2014 floods, where he was touring the Cikovac embankment.
He said that in the past two years, 29 levees had been built, while in the past 25 years the total was only 19.
Vucic promised Obrenovac residents they will "no longer have any reason to fear the flooding of the rivers, because in the future five levees and accumulative lakes will be built."
He also said that during the emergency situation 978 members of the police and the military had been deployed to the affected areas, while about 1,700 were on standby.
"You will have even more safety, you will know that your children can welcome a better future in Obrenovac," said Vucic to those who gathered at Cikovac today.
He then showed a map of Serbia with 304 objects marked where money has been invested since 2014.
Vucic also thanked everyone for investing "energy and love, dedication and commitment towards Serbia."
The emergency situations HQ is set to meet at 13:00 CET on Tuesday.
