Serbia needs more help - EU to support it in migrant crisis
According to the Border Police, more than 370,000 refugees have passed through Serbia from June. "Lack of equipment and exhaustion of the people on the ground who are involved in taking care of refugees are the problem," the minister pointed out.Vulin also said he cannot specify how much financial support Serbia needs, but added that the country will submit its proposal to the European Commission, based on the commitments it assumes.
The European Union will continue to support Serbia in the migrant crisis, and its assistance will depend on specific needs in the field, Head of EU Delegation to Belgrade Michael Davenport said.
We have to work together on solving the migrant crisis, Davenport said at the meeting on migrants on Wednesday, adding that EU officials have also sent "a wake-up call."
Head of the UNHCR office in Serbia Hans Friedrich Schodder stated that Serbia has received EUR 2 million of assistance, but that it will receive more in the coming period.
Assistant Head of the Border Police Directorate Jelena Vasiljevic said that only a small number of migrants stay in Serbia for more than 72 hours, which is insufficient to start the asylum procedure.
