BELGRADE Serbia has a plan for solving the Kosovo problem and will never recognize it as independent, says Tomislav Nikolic. In an interview for Cairo's Al Ahram daily, the Serbian president called on Egypt and other countries to take into account Serbia's reasons against a recognition of Kosovo, because such an act would go against international law and the Charter of the United Nations. I can only ask that you respect the reasons, the evidence that Serbia is presenting, which is completely on the side of Serbia," the president said in the interview, quoted by Serbia's public broadcaster RTS. "Egypt is in my heart. When, as a child, one gains a friendship, it lasts forever. My country introduced me to the friendship with Egypt as a child, and I'll never change that," Nikolic said. He, however, pointed out that he would have to consider "with sadness" Egypt's decision to recognize Kosovo, but noted that "everyone leads their own country and people". There are indications that some Islamic countries will recognize Kosovo, not because it is the right thing to do according to international law, but because they are under pressure from major powers, the president continued. Nikolic recalled that the Serbian parliament on his suggestion passed a resolution that sees Kosovo as a specific territory, and said the document "can completely resolve the current situation", adding: "Under the Constitution we should not recognize Kosovo as some specific territory outside its autonomy, but we anticipated (that) in the resolution, counting on the citizens to approve an amendment to the Constitution, because our citizens are willing to have that problem once and finally settled." "Through that resolution we recognize Kosovo as a specific territory, accept that they have the president, the government, the Constitution, the police and soon the army, but that the Serb community also lives in that terrory," Nikolic was quoted as saying.
