BELGRADE Serbian MPs started a debate on draft changes to the law on the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) on Saturday. The MPs will discuss 46 amendments to the law on the central bank. MPs discuss changes to central bank law Democratic Party (DS) MPs said that the changes to the law would directly politicize the NBS. DS MP Janko Veselinovic said that such situation only existed in Cuba and North Korea. “It will be the case in Serbia as well from Monday, the country that should become an EU member,” he pointed out. DS whip Dragoljub Micunovic said that it was not good for a top party official to be a central governor. According to earlier announcements, Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) top official Jorgovanka Tabakovic could be the next NBS governor. Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic has announced that a session at which a new NBS governor should be elected will probably be scheduled for next week. He said he was not hiding who the new governor would be and that he “has nothing against” Tabakovic’s appointment but stressed that the president independently proposed a candidate for the central bank governor. The parliament is also expected to vote on the changes to the law on NBS and the election of ombudsman on Saturday. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and Democratic Party (DS) proposed that Sasa Jankovic be elected for the second term as ombudsman. (Tanjug, file) B92 Beta Tanjug

Democratic Party (DS) MPs said that the changes to the law would directly politicize the NBS.

DS MP Janko Veselinović said that such situation only existed in Cuba and North Korea.

“It will be the case in Serbia as well from Monday, the country that should become an EU member,” he pointed out.

DS whip Dragoljub Mićunović said that it was not good for a top party official to be a central governor.
