20 Serbs who were injured in an incident at the Merdare administrative crossing on Thursday are stable. The Serbs were injured in the clash with the Kosovo police when they tried to enter Kosovo in order to attend the St. Vitus Day celebration in Gazimestan. Kosovo Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi said that 32 Kosovo Albanian policemen had been injured in the clash. Prokuplje Health Center Spokeswoman Jelena Pantovic told Tanjug that the injured persons were stable and that they are not in life-threatening condition. She explained that Filip Zaric and Danijel Bjelica were being prepared for surgery. They have gunshot wounds to their lower extremities and are treated at the Prokuplje Health Center’s Surgical Ward. 23-year-old Zarko Miljucic sustained the most serious injuries in the incident. He was shot in the spine and was taken to the Nis Clinical Center where he underwent a complicated surgery. EULEX says it will conduct an investigation into the incident but Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic claims that the incidents at the Merdare crossing and in the southern Serbian village of Dobrosin, where police were attacked from across the administrative line, were well-planned provocations. The Merdare administrative crossing, which was closed after the incident on Thursday, has been reopened for traffic. Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga has condemned the Serbs’ attack on the Kosovo police, reads a release issued by her office. “Attempts of the hooligan groups to enter the territory of Kosovo by force should be prevented because they represent a serious violation of law and order and deteriorates the security situation in Kosovo,” it is said in the statement.
