Russia supports the candidacy of Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić for president of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Russia supports the candidacy of Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic for president of the General Assembly of the United Nations. This was confirmed in New York on Wednesday by Russian Ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin. Russia supports Jeremic for UNGA president "I am sure that the nomination will be successful and that Jeremic will be elected," Churkin stated. The diplomat added jokingly that Serbian foreign minister's election to chair the General Assembly "would shake up that organization". Serbia officially nominated Jeremic two weeks ago. If elected, Jeremic would chair the UN body for one year starting in September. Jeremic's rival for the post is Lithuania's UN Ambassador Dalia Leinarte.
