Kosovo Albanian government's Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi said he does not expect tensions in northern Kosovska Mitrovica to escalate. Rexhepi spoke about the period after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivers its advisory opinion on Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, on July 22. K. Albanians "don't expect tensions" "Kosovo's special police forces are ready to intervene at any moment if necessary," said he, and clarified that this would come "if EULEX's representatives request their help". When he previously mentioned the possibility of sending "special police" to the Serb north, Rexhepi's pronouncements were described as "threat of war" in Belgrade. EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, deputy chief Roy Reeve was quoted as saying earlier this week that EULEX had no intention of sending special police forces to the northern areas. Commenting on Reeve's statement, an association gathering former members of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army said that the EU mission was "not serious", and that it "supports quiet partition of northern Kosovo, which is contrary to the integrity and sovereignty of the state of Kosovo". According to reports, the association "warned EULEX that they will consider possible actions if the mission does not fulfill its tasks in northern Kosovo". The north of the province is inhabited predominantly by Serbs, who accept neither the Kosovo Albanian UDI made over two years ago, nor the authority of the government in Pristina. The ICJ will announce on Thursday its advisory opinion regarding the legality under international law of the February 2008 unilateral proclamation.
