Serbia's Interior Minister Ivica Dacic met with EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom in Brussels on Monday. He stated afterwards that she had "very positive" comments regarding the work of the Serbian police, effects of the visa liberalization and anti-crime efforts. Interior minister meets with EU officials Dacic told reporters that tighter police cooperation in southeastern Europe was completely unimaginable just several years earlier. According to him, the EU described the effects of the visa liberalization with Serbia as positive, after some minor problems with asylum seekers that appeared in the first few months of the agreement's implementation. Dacic added that Serbia supported visa liberalization between the EU and the rest of the Western Balkan countries, stating that it would help stabilize the region. The minister informed Malmstrom about the results of police reforms, stressing that Serbia does everything for itself, and not just for the EU. The reforms are conducted to raise the standard of police work, Dacic noted. He invited Malmstrom to visit Serbia and see first hand the results accomplished so far. The Serbian minister stated that the efforts of the government and its international partners would lead to arrest of the remaining Hague indictees. He said that “the problem is that many consider it full cooperation with the Hague court only when someone is arrested“. Former military leader of Bosnian Serbs Ratko Mladic and former political leader of Serbs in Croatia Goran Hadzic have been indicted by the Hague Tribunal and are still at large. The interior minister was quoted as saying that it was important for Serbia to show after the current government took over that it would not hinder the arrest of all those accused of war crimes, and also that it also do everything in its power to cooperate. “In itself, the positive report of Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz says that the international community has gained a realistic insight that the Serbian government is doing everything, together with other international partners, to achieve complete cooperation with the tribunal“. Dacic said he was “hoping that the cooperation would result in the arrest of the remaining indictees“.
