Squeezing the ethnic Hungarian SVM party out of the local government in Subotica is the Democrats’ (DS) way of “punishing” it, says party leader Istvan Pastor. “Essentially, it was about implementing a ‘punishment’ for (SVM) not voting for the state budget . It was not difficult to do in Subotica because there is a revanchist ambition in DS in Subotica to squeeze SMV out,” he told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik, commenting on the recent dissolution of the local-level coalition. “DS punishing Hungarian party over budget” Pastor also said that his party’s coalition with DS can be maintained elsewhere, locally, and on the provincial and state levels. “That’s possible. But, it’s not possible to put the feeling aside. Once, bitten, twice shy,” said Pastor. He also stated that political bickering “could influence an increase in the number of inter-ethnic incidents in Vojvodina”. “It’s very hard to make responsible appraisals of the consequences of these political fights on inter-ethnic relations,” said he. “However, experience tells us that in the last few years, whenever political relations got more tense, there were conflicts with elements of ethnic conflicts.”
