President Boris Tadic will appoint a new VS chief-of-staff in the next month, with Dragan Kolundzija looking the most serious candidate, writes daily Blic. The daily states that Tadic has still to decide on a replacement for Zdravko Ponos, who was dismissed as head of the Serbian Army (VS) after two and a half years in the job, following a dispute with Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac. "Ponos bound for Brussels or Washington" Blic understands that Ponos, who was shown the door on December 30, will probably become Serbian envoy to NATO in Brussels, though a position in Washington has not been ruled out. Nor do sources in the VS rule out the possibility of Ponos retiring from the military, which would leave the way clear for him to enter civil diplomacy or assume a leading position at the Foreign Ministry’s Department for International Cooperation with NATO. Meanwhile, Major General Kolundzija told the daily that he had received no official notification nor any kind of signal that he would be appointed the new chief-of-staff. “It would be very improper of me to comment. We’ll see,“ said Kolundzija, who is head of the Operational Affairs Department and commanded the 15th Armored Brigade in Pristina during the 1999 NATO air strikes. General Miloje Miletic is performing the duties of acting chief-of-staff until the appointment of Ponos’s successor. Zdravko Ponos (Beta, archive)
