The move, formalized with a note handed to the diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belgrade, came after this Asian country decided to recognize the Kosovo Albanians' unilateral declaration of independence. Serbia expels Malaysian ambassador Tanjug reported that a statement from the ministry said the move was in line with a previously adopted government Action Plan. Belgrade sees the act of recognition at a time when the International Court of Justice is deliberating the issue of the proclamation's legitimacy as a form of pressure on that tribunal, the statement added. The Malaysian diplomat now has 48 hours to leave Serbia. Earlier on Friday, Skender Hyseni, appointed by the authorities in Pristina as their foreign minister, announced after a meeting with the Malaysian office chief in Kosovo that this country had recognized the declaration.
