Acting Belgrade Mayor Zoran Alimpic says there is no reason to introduce a temporary administration in the capital. Alimpic said that that possibility existed under the law, and could happen in the event that the local assembly was not constituted by July 22, or if it was constituted, but that no mayor or city council was elected in the subsequent 30 days. "No need for temporary measures in capital" “There’s still time until July 14 when the constitutive session is scheduled, until July 22 for councilor mandates to be verified and an assembly speaker and secretary to be elected, which is necessary for the city assembly to be constituted,” explained the acting mayor. “After that, there is further time frame of 30 days to elect a mayor and city council,” he said, adding that he was sure that “if a majority already exists, Belgrade could have a new administration as early as Monday.” Alimpic reiterated that if no candidate for speaker or mayor was able to obtain a majority, “the government is obliged to take measures under the law, to form a temporary council to assume the powers of the parliament,” adding that the temporary administration had six months in which to call new elections. The acting mayor said that during the course of the day, the assembly’s oldest councilor, Branislav Belic from the Democratic Party (DS), who will chair the assembly, would have a meeting with the heads of all the local party groups to agree over technical matters. The Belgrade local assembly’s constitutive session will be held on Monday at 10.00 CET, all councilors have confirmed their attendance, and according to Alimpic, the composition of the new city authorities will depend on policy and a political agreement between the parties.
