Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg will propose that Prague recognizes Kosovo on April 2. This was confirmed by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zuzana Opletalova. Czech foreign minister calls for recognition on April 2 That means that Schwarzenberg will not make any concessions to his coalition partners who have called for a debate to be held on the matter within the Coalition Council. The minister stated earlier that he would like the Czech Republic to recognize Kosovo ahead of the NATO summit in Bucharest that starts on April 2. It seems that not even Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, who agrees with the National Christian Democrats, was unable to persuade him to postpone recognition, particularly as there is an absence of consensus over the question of recognizing Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence within the government’s senior partner, the Civil Democratic Party (ODS). According to the calculations of daily Hospodarzske Novini, of 18 ministers, only four support recognition, eight oppose it, while the others are undecided. Other opponents of recognition include President Vaclav Klaus, who is the founder and honorary president of the ODS, and the opposition social democrats and communists.
