The UNMIK headquarters was evacuated Wednesday after a suspicious looking package was found in front of the building. Officials of the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo (KFOR) said it was possible that the package contained explosives, and ordered the building in Pristina emptied out until the situation was under control. Kosovo: Bomb scare evacuates UN HQs The neighborhood in which the UN building is located was also evacuated. Also Wednesday, the center of Pristina was the scene of a peaceful protest, organized by the Union of Albanian Students, with some 500 people chanting slogans such as "Kosovo is not Palestine" and demanding independence for the province, rather than a partition of the territory or similar solutions which would not create a new, independent state. The organizers said earlier that a memorandum would be sent from the protest to the UN, the U.S., the EU and members of the Contact Group, calling for a "guarantee of independence and the province’s territorial integrity." Organizers expected the arrival of eight buses carrying students from Macedonia and five from Albania. It is reported that the rally has received the support of associations linked to the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), the Student Parliament and the Self-Determination movement. Numerous protests have been organized by independence-seeking ethnic Albanians this year, some of which have included violence and fatalities.
