The president of Montenegro’s governing Democratic Party of Socialists, Milo Djukanovic, has sued the director of daily Vijest. Zeljko Ivanovic claimed that Djukanovic was responsible for a recent assault on him. Djukanovic sues editor for libel Ex-Prime Minister Djukanovic is seeking EUR 1mn in damages for insult and injury to his reputation. He also sued the editor-in-chief of Vijesti Ljubisa Mitrovic, as well the publisher Daily Press. Djukanovic’s legal case, whose details Vijesti carried on Thursday, says that the damages sought do not reflect an estimate of the harm to his own and his family’s honor and reputation, as there is no amount of money which can compensate for that. “The pain in his soul will be paid by this, but not fully reimbursed. This is no more than just a necessary ’sticking plaster’ of consolation for the plaintiff”, the legal claim says. Ivanovic said that Vijesti is ready for the court action, and that he hopes the newspaper’s lawyer will present enough evidence to counter Djukanovic’s charges. “The amount of money that Djukanovic requests is the best evidence that his honor was not harmed and his soul not injured”, Ivanovic said on Thursday. Ivanovic was beaten on September 1, after the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the daily Vijesti. Three so far unidentified assailants beat him with wooden sticks and metal bars. He blamed Djukanovic for the attack saying “only Milo Djukanovic and his family can send greetings of this kind”. Police are continuing to look for the assailants.
