Komšić takes chair of Bosnian presidency

According to the Bosnian constitution rooted in the Dayton peace accord that ended the 1992-1995 civil war, the presidency rotates every eight months between the country's three main groups - Muslims, Serbs and Croats.

Handing over the chairmanship to Komšić, Radmanović said his term in office was successful, but not all goals have been fulfilled “because of the political climate” in the country.

The international community, which safeguards peace in Bosnia, has insisted on police and constitutional reforms as a precondition for Bosnia’s advances towards the European Union, but representatives of the three nationalities have failed to come to an agreement after more than a year of political bickering.

“These disagreements and the lack of compromise on major issues for Bosnia-Herzegovina have slowed down our pace on the road to the EU,” Radmanović said.

The presidency makes decisions by consensus and Komsić was likely to run into similar obstacles during his term.
