Serbia faces drought with poor irrigation
The only way to solve the problem is to install irrigation systems as soon as possible. For the sake of comparison, in Greece, the portion of irrigated land has grown by 28,000 hectares a year since 1961.Nonetheless, only one percent of arable land in Serbia is equipped with irrigation systems. In the entire central Serbia, no more than 3,000 hectares are regularly supplied with water.
Serbia also lacks irrigation channels necessary to supply pipes with river or well water. Those built in the sixties and seventies are worn-out and severely damaged.
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Slobodan Milosavljević reminded that the World Bank granted Friday US$ 21.5mn for reform of agriculture, and as many as US$ 50mn for projects of irrigation and drainage.
