Unknown persons damaged 29 headstones overnight in the Muslim cemetery of Gazilar in Novi Pazar, a town in southwestern Serbia.

Dozens of headstones damaged in cemetery in Novi Pazar

The deputy public prosecutor in Novi Pazar, Jovan Milanovic, investigated the scene this morning. He put the number of desecrated graves at 34.

The local police secured the scene immediately after receiving reports about the incident from citizens, reports said earlier in the day.

Milanovic said that fingerprints and samples were taken from the scene and and were being analyzed, and that footage from security cameras was also available. The police are looking through the recordings in order to identify the perpetrators, he said.

Muslims in Novi Pazar and elsewhere in Serbia are today celebrating Eid al-Fitr. It is customary to visit cemeteries on the day, after the morning prayer, and offer prayers for the souls of the departed.
