The Hague Tribunal trial chamber rejected the demand for temporary release for former OVK commander Ramush Haradinaj. He and former Kosovo Liberation Army (OVK) member Lahi Brahimaj requested to be freed temporarily from custody before their war crimes trial begins. Haradinaj to remain in custody The trial chamber stated that Haradinaj’s case holds a special amount of risk for the integrity of the trial, taking into consideration that the pretrial hearings will not last long. A far as Brahimaj is concerned, the trial chamber stated that there is no guarantee that we would not present a danger to victims, witnesses and other person if set free. The defendants requested the temporary release in late July and have the right to appeal the chamber’s decision. The appeals chamber of the Hague Tribunal abolished the not guilty verdict in Haradinaj’s original case because it was confirmed that some witnesses were intimidated during the first case. After his first voluntary surrender in June 2005, Haradinaj was temporarily released from custody by the Tribunal before the trial began in March 2007, and he was allowed a limited public involvement as the leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo. He and Brahimaj were initially acquitted of charged related to killings, torture, rape and intimidation of Serbs, other non-Albanians, but also ethnic Albanians in Kosovo in 1998, prior to the 1999 war there. But the Hague Appeals Chamber decided that the proceedings were invalid due to witness intimidation, and ordered the retrial. Ramush Haradinaj (FoNet archive)
