A panel consisting of three EULEX judges rejected a U.S. extradition request in Kosovska Mitrovica on Friday. The request referred to Bajram Aslani, an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo, who is suspected of providing material support for terrorist activities, and taking part in a conspiracy. U.S. request rejected, agreement from 1901 quoted The U.S. submitted the request for Alsani's extradition on June 2. The District Court in Kosovska Mitrovica, however, rejected this, and questioned the validity of an extradition agreement signed on October 21, 1901, between the United States and the Kingdom of Serbia, adding that even if valid, the document would not allow for extradition of "own citizens". The court also said that "material support for terrorism" was not among the activities mentioned in the agreement signed 109 years ago. EULEX stated that "according to the Kosovo criminal law, a Kosovo citizen can be extradited if the extradition request refers to a crime committed outside Kosovo". The panel of judges found that the American request did not provide sufficient grounds to suspect that Aslani had committed the crime.
