Legal proceedings against Marko Milosevic and his associates over a legal action launched by the late Otpor activist Radojko Lukovic have been suspended. Lukovic died last year in July, and under the law, proceedings will be suspended because no-one from his family has applied to take up the suit against Milosevic on his behalf, Judge Gordana Vidojkovic said. Marko Milosevic trial suspended The case was with the district court at the time, with an appeal filed against the acquittal of Milosevic and five of his friends on charges of participating in a fight and inflicting grievous bodily harm (GBH) on Lukovic and one other person on May 2, 2000. In mid-February, the court partly overturned the section of the verdict pertaining to GBH and returned the case to the district court, after which Lukovic’s cousins Irena and Marina Vavic signed an affidavit authorizing the resumption of proceedings against the suspects. Local Otpor official Momcilo Veljkovic told B92 that the family could not have know what the results of the appeal would be in advance. He believes that plans are afoot to suspend the proceedings against Milosevic. “This is only a resumption of the torture against us and a strategy by people who will stop at nothing to free Milosevic of responsibility and enable him to return to the country,” he said. The decision to suspend proceedings was taken on March 20. The lawyer of the assaulted Otpor members, Dusan Cvejic, was informed of the decision today and he has three days to appeal. Should the decision be upheld, the municipal court will only charge one of Milosevic’s colleagues, Nebojsa Sokolovic, with the assault of the activists.
