The Palace of Justice has been evacuated 25 times this year because of bomb threats, and many believe this is due to sloppy legislation. Even though two suspects have been arrested over the hoax bomb threats, new threats continue to arrive. Most are sent in the morning, when there are about 5,000 people in the building. Reform needed to tackle court obstruction According to procedures, the building must be evacuated for the police to conduct a search. Lawyer Bozo Prelevic says that the threats do not concern him, and will require more than strict control to put a stop to them, adding that the police must work more responsibly and that systematic reform of the judicial system needs to be conducted. Judicial employees want court police to have more powers, as much as the regular police, with the right to use weapons, and their jurisdiction would cover cases related to the court. Their roles would be similar to those of federal marshals in the United States. The Palace of Justice will be even busier once the second-instance trial of the members of the Zemun Clan, convicted of the murder of the late Zoran Djindjic, gets under way. Some analysts believe that the Supreme Court’s decision to hold that trial outside the building of the Special Court is ill-advised.
