The District Court in Varazdin has sentenced 4 Croatian policemen to prison for crimes against JNA soldiers. They were convicted of assisting in war crimes committed against the Yugoslav National Army (JNA) troops and civilians in Bjelovar in 1991. Croatian police convicted of 1991 crimes First accused Luka Markesic was sentenced to four years, and Zdenko Radic, Zoran Maras and Ivan Orlovic to three years imprisonment for assisting in war crimes against prisoners of war and civilians, reported the Croatian agency Hina. They were accused of helping unknown individuals to take away and then shoot six captive JNA soldiers and severely wound a civilian. The seven were imprisoned in Bjelovar police station, after Croatian forces had taken control of the Bozidar Adzija barracks in the town on September 29, 1991. In explaining his ruling, Judge Zdravko Pintaric said that Markesic had committed the crimes he was accused of, that he had announced the arrival of special troops to take the keys for the cells where the prisoners were being held, and that the remaining defendants had taken the keys. It had been determined that the prisoners had been taken to a forest and shot, while the civilian was seriously wounded. The Court said that the defendants had assisted the culprits consciously, and that, even though they claimed not to have anything to do with what took place, there was no evidence to suggest that they had done what they had with any other aim in mind. The JNA troops involved were Radovan Barberic, Zdravko Dokman, Radovan Gredeljevic, Mirko Ostojic, Ivan Hojsak and Bosko Radonjic, together with civilian, Savo Kovac, who was suspected of being a sniper. According to the indictment, on the night of October 4, all were taken to Cesma forest near Mail Korenov, where they were killed, while Kovac survived, sustaining severe injuries. The trial, which finished yesterday, was the third such for this crime, the defendants having been acquitted previously. At this trial, the indictment was altered, and the defendants were accused of assisting in, rather than actually committing, war crimes. All the defendants had pleaded not guilty and had denied any involvement in the crimes.
