Serbia's top state brass was present today as construction works on the left lane of the Horgos-Novi Sad highway started this Sunday. This highway stretch is part of the pan-European Corridor 10. Works start on Corridor 10 stretch The 20 kilometers of the road will be built by two Serbian companies, instead of Austria's Alpine Porr consortium, which was originally given the job, but is now involved in international arbitrage it initiated against the state of Serbia. The two construction companies – Putevi Beograd and Putevi Uzice – have six months to complete the job worth RSD 1.5bn. PM Mirko Cvetkovic announced previously that investing in infrastructure projects is one of the most reliable ways to create jobs during the economic crisis. For this reason, he said, the government will make Corridor 10 and works on other important roads its priority "in the next four years". Cvetkovic said that this has the support of international financial institutions, and that in addition to employing construction, metal and road industry, such projects also involve small and medium enterprises. Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic, meanwhile, says that Serbia plans to build a total of 50 kilometers of Corridor 10 roads this year, while it will strive to complete the 170 kilometers "as soon as possible". (FoNet) "Crucial for Serbia's development" President Boris Tadic stated Sunday that the completion of Corridor 10 will be of crucial importance for Serbia's future economic development, but that it will also raise the country's European potentials as a key and central part of the Balkan region. At the opening of the works on Corridor 10 route through Serbia near Novi Sad, Tadic expressed belief that the current Serbian government will be the first in Serbian recent history to complete the capital projects that it had initiated. "The EU is not complete without Serbia in it, Serbia is the central country of the South East Europe and that is why, if we do not build roads, we lose not only money, but also the credibility and potential for the influence of our country in the world," Tadic said. The president pointed out that in the next three years approximately 200,000 Serbian citizens will have jobs owing to the construction of Corridor 10 and added that the government's economic measures make sense only if they enable the creation of new jobs. He underscored that in the following years the traffic at the Corridor 10 railway will be improved by limiting speed to 110 km/h in the most difficult sections, that is to 160 km/h in the rest of Corridor 10.
