Gunmaker optimism despite crisis

Kragujevac-based Zastava Oruzje (Zastava Arms) gunmaker had an income of USD 23mn in 2008, it was announced. The company, its Director Rade Gromovic said on Thursday, expects to increase earnings by at least USD 7mn in 2009. Gunmaker optimism despite crisis Gromovic told reporters during a news conference in Kragujevac said the income earned this year is the highest in the past 17 years. "The factory's sales were up by 80 percent against last year," he pointed out, stressing that the results would have been "even better had the contract with Remington not been put on stand-by". Gromovic said half the planned USD 30mn income in 2009 has already been covered by contracts. The factory has realized 89 percent of its planned income through exports, he specified. "The bulk of export was realized through the mediation of the United Nations - products of the military program such as light machine guns, general purpose machine guns, CZ handguns, as well as some shotguns and sporting rifles," he explained.
