Russian investment in three Serbian energy projects would come to EUR 2bn, according to a draft agreement. The draft agreement where Russia offers Serbia to help build the Southern Stream pipeline, a strategic partnership in building an underground gas reservoir in Banatski Dvor, and in modernizing the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS), envisages the establishment of three joint energy companies where the Russians would have a 51 percent holding, and Serbia 49 percent. Russia offers EUR 2bn energy deal One company would be entrusted with building the pipeline, and would run it, another would run the reservoir, and the third would control NIS, according to energy site Energoportal. The Russian stake would exceed EUR 2bn. One branch of the Southern Stream pipeline would go towards Thessaloniki in Greece. According to the site, Serbia has until December 25 to accept the Russian offer. Although this has not been mentioned in public, information from Moscow suggests that this date is very important as a ratification program has already been drawn up between Russia, Bulgaria and Greece for January 18 next year. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also attend the ceremony, to be held in Sofia. The presence of the Serbian president in Sofia also hangs on the government’s decision. Scant information from Belgrade indicates that a decision is being prepared and that a number of meetings have been held by working groups led by Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and made up of other ministers.
