Szijjarto on Wednesday accused the Romanian prime minister of "losing his self-control and insulting the whole of Hungary with his unreasonable statement," reported the MTI.

Stressing that "civilized European politicians do not present such insults," the Hungarian official also said Ponta had "completely lost his balance on the national (Romanian) political scene."

Commenting late last night on Twitter on news that Hungary planned to extend its barbed wire fence built recently on the border with Serbia to Romania, Ponta remarked that the situation "smells like Europe in the 1930s and 1940s."
