"Serbia's participation in TAP no obstacle"

"There is nothing strange about the fact that southeast European countries, including Serbia, as well as Macedonia, judging by recent statements, are looking for alternative variants that are in their interest - it does not mean that they are giving up on implementing joint projects with us," Chizhov told reporters in Moscow.

Russia could also participate in the TAP, Ria Novosti quoted Chizhov as saying.

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Thursday that Serbia is prepared to diversify its sources of gas supplies.

Last December, Russia abandoned the South Stream gas pipeline project, blaming the decision on what it said was a non-constructive stance of the EU.

As an alternative, it was decided that a gas pipeline be built through Turkey and that a gas hub be set up at the Greek border for southern European consumers.

Chizhov expressed confidence that Russia's Turkish Stream gas pipeline project has good chances of becoming one of the main gas suppliers in southern Europe.

According to him, Macedonia's participation "should be a subject of negotiations with the EU."
